What does God think about Pride? . . . The Role of Humility in Our Lives (part 6a)

What does God think about Pride? . . . The Role of Humility in Our Lives (part 6a)

~ This blog post is an adapted excerpt from a sermon by Brad Ettore.  You can hear the whole sermon, The Role of Humility in Our Lives (part 6),  from Agathos Church – a non-denominational Christian Church in Columbus, Ohio by clicking here.

How does God think about pride?  Where do you think He really is with it?  Look at what Proverbs 6:16-17a says:

These six things the Lord hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: a proud look . . .”

A PROUD look is tops of a list of things that are an abomination to the Lord.  God does not want us “sort of working on” things that are an abomination to Him.  He does not want them in our lives AT ALL!

Proverbs 16:5 “Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord . . .”

Now look at Proverbs 8:13:

“The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.”

“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)  “Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'” (1 Peter 5:5)  God resists the proud.  It is a military term meaning He puts up a military front against the proud.  God tells us to resist the devil.  In the same way, God resists the proud.

Why does God hate pride so much?

First of all, pride is the very nature of His enemy; satan himself breathed the poison of pride into our parents (Adam and Eve).  Pride was what satan used to get man to turn away from God – to say “no” to God being God – and to desire to be God themselves.  But pride is not the atmosphere of Heaven . . .

Heaven breathes the air of humility.

The very atmosphere of Heaven is humility.  It is the nature of God.  Pride is the inverse – the antithesis – of humility.  It is literally evil and demonic.

So, how does God think about pride?  Where do you think He really is with it?
