The Reality of the Demonic Realm & Our Authority Over It

The Reality of the Demonic Realm & Our Authority Over It

Agathos Church is a non-denominational Christian Church in Columbus, Ohio.  This blog post is a summary of a sermon by Brad Ettore.  You can hear the whole sermon, The Reality of the Demonic Realm & Our Authority Over It , by clicking here.

Most people, including most Christians, are clueless as to how much demonic influence there is in their life and the lives of those around them – and Satan loves it.

As Christians, a demon cannot come “in” but it can come “on.”  Some translations use the phrase “demon possessed” – that is not possible for a believer.  We are inhabited by the Holy Spirit and He is not sharing His house with anyone.  A believer can, however, be “demonized” meaning harassed by a demon.  There is a big difference.

We have been given, by God, through Jesus Christ, all authority over the demonic realm.  It does not matter if you are the “least” of all the Christians on the earth, you still have just as much power as any other Christian has over the demonic realm.  God gave the authority over the demonic realm to the Body of Christ – period. The problem is, most don’t know that they have the authority and they allow the devil and his cohorts to intimidate them in many areas of their life. If we simply knew the truth about what’s going on in the spirit realm – and who has the authority – all of our fear would go away! We will realize “oh, you mean I’m boss? I’m the one that’s in control?” We realize that there is really nothing to be afraid of.

Don’t get this wrong idea about satan – He is not God.  He is not omnipresent.  He is a created angel.  He was created by God like all other angels.  He had a role in Heaven, but He fell from Heaven.  His “class” has stayed the same though – he is an angel.  Satan is not even in the “God class.”  As believers, we are at least in the God class!  Satan can only be in one place at a time – and he doesn’t understand truth – or else he would have never thought to “try to be like God!”

A Spiritual Battle

We are in a spiritual battle.  Eph. 6:10-12 says “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” The enemy is persistently scheming how to get at us.

We do not wrestle against flesh and blood.  When we find ourselves getting really “ticked off” with another person, there is a strong chance that there may be a demonic influence in that person’s life (or in yours).  Yet, even as believers, we are very humanistic in our thinking and get mad at the person.  Most of us are not even thinking about the spiritual realm and the reality of what’s going on there – we view everything “naturally.”  Instead we could be thinking “maybe that person needs my prayer because they are ‘under the influence’.”  If God’s people will not step up and fight the fight of faith, who is?  We need to become spiritually aware.  We can intercede on behalf of others who are under the influence of the enemy!  Let us stand in the gap to pray!

God gave the earth (and the dominion of it) to man. God is not an indian-giver. We have the keys to the earth.  It is like a car dealership giving someone a 6 year lease on a car.  The lessee can do what they want with that car – take care of it or not.  During that 6 years, the lessee can do what they want with the car … they are going to pay for it when they take it back at the end of their lease, but during that 6 years they can do what they want.  God leased the earth to man for 6,000 years. In the meantime we are in authority over it; we can do what we want with it.  So, God will do anything in the earth unless those He gave the authority to ask Him to.  God will not do anything without us asking us.  In His sovereignty, God gave the authority to man and He is not going back on His Word and taking it back.  He will take back His authority at the end of time. Jesus will have authority for 1000 years and then the Father rule and reign for all eternity.

Matt. 18:18 “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”  We need to wake up and partner with God to bring about His will on earth!  2 Cor. 2:10-11 says “Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ, lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.”  Satan wants to get a hook in us through unforgiveness.

The way we stand agains the devil is by using the Word of God against him.  Jesus quoted the Word of God to the devil in faith “it is written . . .”  Jesus took the Word of God against the devil.  That is the answer to everything the devil is doing.  You take your authority and tell the devil to get behind you.  You take authority over the devil with the Word of God!  In our case, Jesus told us to use His Name.  That is why we speak “in the Name of Jesus.”  God will back up whatever we say.  When we speak like that the devil isn’t looking at us and intimidated by us, but he is looking at and intimidated by who is standing behind us when we speak like that: God!  God is the creator of the universe – and the devil’s creator.  God is behind us flexing his muscle and saying “are you listening to my daughter, are you listening to my son, you better because I am going to beat your head in.”  The devil runs away.  When you invoke the Name of Jesus, he is no longer dealing with just you.  All you need to know is that’s true.  When you know it, you say it, and satan knows that you know it and the devil runs.

Mark 16:15-17 says “ And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;”  Jesus said “in My name they will cast out demons.”  Therefore, there are demons and we can cast them out!

When we wake up to satan’s schemes in our life, then and only then, will we really see the victories we want to have in our life.  When a Chrisitan is unaware of the demonic influences in his or her life and the lives of those around them, they are constantly taking two steps forward and one step back.  We sometimes don’t even realize how much we are getting tripped up constantly on our way.  We don’t even realize that the strained relationship, sickness, or the catastrophe with our car were demonic.  We are under attack and we’re doing nothing about it.  So we are constantly being tripped up. When we become aware of his activities, we can catch them right in the beginning so we can take care of them early so we can keep our traction going – and we will find ourselves rocking and rolling – way beyond how you were able to before your began taking authority over the works of the enemy.

10 Things Satan does to trip you up

1.Insights fleshly desire.  We think every fleshly desire we have is our own.  Wrong.  Fleshly desires are a major in-road for the devil.  He will cause us to have fleshly desires that aren’t even ours.  We don’t even realize that they are not from us.  When we recognize it, we can take authority over those demonic desires and stop it in a second!  All of a sudden we will think “wow, that fleshly desire I had is gone!”  And that happened because we took authority over it – as opposed to just thinking it was us and we needed to manage it.  No, it’s satanic.  (not every time, but a lot of times it is).
2.Deception through sowing lies in your thought processes  In Jn 8:44, Jesus said “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”  Satan is the very origin and source of all lies and deception.
3.Deception through false doctrine (false gospels or false teaching or RELIGION)  False teaching is literally a work of the devil to keep Chrisitans bound up through wrong thinking, condemnation, guilt – deception through false gospels.
4.Physical attacks (sickness and injury)  Sometimes we stub our toe 3 or 4 times in a day – or something odd like that.  We think to ourselves “what is going on here!?!”  If you find yourself in injury after injury after injury (or sickness after sickness after sickness), you may do well to come against a demonic attack.
5.Stealing the Word out of your heart  The enemy works to prevent revelation knowledge in your life.  Mark 4:14-17 says “The sower sows the word. And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts. These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they stumble.”  Satan does not the Word of God to take root in our hearts because he knows that when it becomes a revelation he can never get it out of us.  Peter received revelation knowledge of who Jesus was and Jesus said “upon this rock I will build my church” – Jesus is building His church upon revelation knowledge!  He went on to say that the gates of hell will not be able to prevail agains that.  That does not mean the gates of hell will come against us – gates don’t run down the street.  They aren’t coming after you – you go after them!  And the gates of hell will not prevail against you when you kick the doors of hell upon with your revelation knowledge!   Because you have revelation, you can start taking territory and the gates of hell won’t prevail – they can’t stop you!  The devil doesn’t want you to get revelation so he tries to steal the word that was sown out of our heart.  One of the ways he does that is by trying to keep us from listening to a good word again.  “No, you don’t want to listen to that sermon again, you’ve already heard it once, you’re good.”
6.Unforgiveness   Offense is the bait of unforgiveness.  When someone does you wrong, satan is working to get the hook of unforgiveness into your heart!  He gets someone to do something that will offend your heart.  We step into the trap and are snared by the devkil.  God commands us to forgive everybody – that is a command not a suggestion!  We are called to love everybody and we cannot love someone if we have not forgiven them!  God alone is their judge and The Judge will take care of the judging – we just take care of the loving!  Take comfort in the fact that there is nothing that escapes God’s notice; we can just be free to love them!  We don’t wrestle against flesh and blood!  That person is not our problem!  Just love them!  Satan is wanting to use people as a puppet to get at you.  If we could the spiritual influence on that person that is being offensive to us, we would pray for them to help set them free!  We need to wake up to the spiritual reality of what is driving people to hurt other people and pray for them to help set them free!  When we are spiritually minded and thinking right, we bring reconciliation through our prayers.
7.Anger  When you become angry at someone, stop!  Get ahold of it and ask yourself “is this coming out of my spirit?”  Nearly never!  Most of us are not dealing with “righteous anger” very often. If you take certain actions with your anger, you just sinned . . . STOP IT!
8.Finances  Another place that the devil attacks us is in the area of finances.  Loss of job, car breaking down, business deal gone wrong, etc.  This is why God made a promise to the tither (Malachi 3) that He will rebuke the devour for our sake!  Satan is very active in trying to destroy our finances.
9.Thought Life When you are contending for something in your faith, welcome to the fight of faith.  The devil comes with all sorts of thoughts of doubt: “you really think that is going to happen?  That’s not going to really happen . . .”  All too get you off of your faith.  You have to stand on the Word and you have to fight the fight of faith (which is your thought life).
10.Sinning Satan will try to lead you down the path of sin.  God is always trying to lead us into paths of righteousness.  Romans 6:16 says “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?”  When we sin we are serving the devil.  When we make the choice to walk in obedience, we are serving God for He is the author of that righteous act.  When we sin it is always an act of the devil.  All acts of the flesh are enmity against God.  (see Rom. 8:5-8)  The flesh is not subject to the ways of God for it wants to do its own thing.

We have total authority over the devil.  How is that possible?  We gave the authority to him through sin.  Adam and Eve came him the crown and the keys through tricking them into sin.

So, what did God do?  He came back and He tricked the devil.  God kind of let satan know “I think this is the one you want to kill, right?”  And the devil said “I think that’s Him; I think that’s the One.  Get Him!  Let’s kill Him!”  And when the devil killed Him, God said “that’s what I needed.”  Jesus paid the price for the sins of man.  Had the devil and his cohorts known, they never would have crucified the Lord of Glory.

Col. 2:13-15 says “And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”  God has disarmed principalities and powers!

Matt. 28:18-19 “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,'”  “Go” means Jesus has delegated the authority to us!

Luke 10:17-20 “Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.’  And He said to them, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.  Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.'”  We have been given authority over ALL the power of the enemy and nothing shall by any means hurt us!

How do we take that authority over the devil?  Simply give a command in the Name of Jesus!  Satan will obey you – he has not choice.  If you are about to get in a fight with your spouse and you can’t even tell why you are so angry … tell tale sign of the enemy.  Groundless anger.  Grab your spouse’s hand and say “let’s pray!”  “father, we submit this situation to you right now and ask for your blessing.  We need your help.”  Already you will feel a major change.  Then say “devil, in the Name of Jesus, I take authority over you and all of your work. I command you to stop your work now in the Name of Jesus.  Amen.”  When you open your eyes you will wonder what you were even mad about.  We don’t ask the devil for anything.  We command him to stop his work in the Name of Jesus and he has to obey us.

Father we pray a sealing over this word right now!
