The Process of Faith (part 1e)

~ This blog post is an adapted excerpt from a sermon by Peter DeWitt.  You can hear the whole sermon, The Process of Faith,  from Agathos Church – a non-denominational Christian Church in Columbus, Ohio by clicking here.

In my last post about the process of faith, I shared about ALL of the promises of God being YES for believers because of their position as co-heirs with Christ.  All the promises of God are YES IN HIM.   To give you another example where the same dynamic plays out, let’s look at Isa 54:17:  “‘No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn.  This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is from Me,’ says the Lord.”

So, in this case, God gives two promises.  First he says: no weapon formed against you will prosper.  Then He gives another promise: if any tongue rises against you in judgment (an accusation) you will actually condemn your accuser.  That is a powerful promise!  Why?  It is saying this is actually your INHERITANCE as a servant of the Lord!

Look at the next thing God says “and their righteousness is from ME declares the Lord.”  We need to be established in the reality of WHY the promises are ours!  There is one reason and one reason only that all the promises of God are YES in Him.  And that is that the blood of Jesus Christ that has cleansed you from all sin and has made you as righteous and as pure as Jesus Himself!  As a believer, you are clothed in the robe of righteousness; you are perfect before God; you are a co-her with Christ and His inheritance is Yours!   That is WHY all the promises of God are YES in Him!  In reminding both us and our accuser that our inheritance is based on our righteousness being from Him, God’s declaration actually sounds much like what Paul wrote in 2 Cor 10:5 “bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” (emphasis mine)  God knows that the enemy will try to get us to abdicate His promises by getting us to focus on our righteousness instead of the righteousness of Christ which is ours by faith!

God’s promises, each and every one of them, the thousands of promises in the Word of God, all find their YES in Him!  They are all YES for you.  If you are in Christ Jesus, all of His promises are YES for you!  Notice that change, it’s not IF you are perfect – it’s IF you are in Christ Jesus!  Christ Jesus is the end of the law for righteousness for all who believe! (Rom 10:4)
