Taking God at His Word: Possessing His Promises

Taking God at His Word: Possessing His Promises

~ This blog post is an adapted excerpt from a sermon by Renee Roeckelein.  You can hear the whole sermon, Taking God at His Word,  from Agathos Church. Columbus, Ohio by clicking here.

In Deuteronomy 1:8, Moses is giving an address to the Israelites . He says “See, I have set the land before you; go in and possess the land which the Lord swore to your fathers—to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—to give to them and their descendants after them.”  God tells them 35 times to go in and posesss! 35 TIMES!

We are to possess the land!

“So it shall be, when the Lord your God brings you into the land of which He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you large and beautiful cities which you did not build,” (Deut. 6:10, emphasizes mine)  God promised land.  He swore land to them.  God’s promise is the legal note that gives us the land!  The land is a gift.  It has large and beautiful cities which they did not build!  The promises of God cause us to get things we did not work for – God did all the work for them ahead of time!  The Israelites were delivered from the power of darkness (Egypt) and transferred into a different kingdom (the promised land).  God told them about the land He had promised to them 35 times! We know it was God’s will to possess it!

Yet, only 2 of them possessed the land.

What is the land we are supposed to possess?  Us?  Now?  Here?  The Bible is our land. There are thousands of promises in God’s Word – waiting for us to realize them!  God has prepared the land, He has spoken the promises, are you going to possess the land promised to you?

The first step is to know what is ours!  Jesus died for believers to possess a land!  When Jesus said on the cross “it’s finished,” it became our Land!!!  BUT IT IS NOT AUTOMATIC.  Don’t let the enemy hide your inheritance.  He wants to keep us out of God’s Word, for if we were to read the Word of God, we would know what is ours.  He wants us to listen to religious teachings that talk the blessings out of God’s Word – that sterilize the potency of His promises.  That’s why we should have the fear of the Lord – so we care so much about what God says that we won’t be dissuaded by what others say contrary to His Word or what circumstances say counter to His Word.

“For all the promises of God in Him are yes and in Him amen to the glory of God” (2 Cor. 1:20)  The Word is ours to possess.  Read just some of these promises:

  • Jesus took all of our: griefs, sorrows, transgressions, iniquities, and things needing healing (Isa. 53)
  • To trample over all the power of the enemy. (Luke 10:19)
  • We have been given the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven . . . to loose and bind what what has been bound  (Matt 16:19)
  • To be more than conquerers.  To not just win but to win well. (Rom. 8:37)
  • We are blessed so that we lend to many nations and do not borrow (Deut. 28:12)
  • We are blessed to be leaders not followers (Deut. 28:13)
  • Everything we set our hands to is blessed (Deut. 28:8)

That is just a small portion of WHAT we are to possess! HOW do we do it? Walking by faith!  There is no other way; faith is the only way!  One of the great challenges in our Christian life is to walk by faith, because we have circumstances screaming against us. We have people’s own thoughts speaking against us.  BUT, we have the Word saying another thing.  We get a choice . . . Whose Words will determine your world?
