Taking God at His Word (part 2a)

Taking God at His Word (part 2a)

~ This blog post is an adapted excerpt from a sermon by Renee Roeckelein.  You can hear the whole sermon, Taking God at His Word (part 2),  from Agathos Church – a non-denominational Christian Church in Columbus, Ohio by clicking here.

“And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.”  (Rev. 22:12)  Jesus is going to reward us according to our work.  As believers, our salvation is completely secure, but rewards still exist in Heaven and they exist based on our work!  As believers, our work is to possess His promises.  The Israelites serve as an example of this – they had a promised land to possess.  God’s scriptural promises are our promised land.  Our life is about possession, and we will never know what we are to possess unless we know His Word!

Read theses passages of scripture looking for promises that you can stand on.  (Hint: some of the scriptures have multiple promises in them; see if you can find 5 or more in one of them):

  • Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.  But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.” (Isa 53:4-5)
  • “‘And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.'” (Matt 16:19)
  • “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” (Mark 16:17-18)
Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”  (Luke 10:19)
  •  For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.” (2 Cor 1:20)

The Bible contains thousands of promises – just waiting for us to possess them!  We possess His promises by faith!  God is saying “go ahead, take me at my Word!”  Taking God at His Word means believing His Word over everything else.  We are used to making our feelings our truth.  We are used to making our circumstances our truth.  We are used to making what we see our truth.  We are even used to making what others say our truth.  But the trouble with all of those scenarios is that they are all “our truth” or “someone else’s truth.”  There are lots of supposed “truths” out there.  But there is only one Truth!  He is THE Way, THE Truth, and THE Life.  So, regardless of your circumstances , situation, or feelings, there is a higher Truth – a higher Reality!

God’s promises supersede circumstance.

You may think, “but I don’t see it . . .”  You’re right, you don’t see it . . . YET!  “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen!” (Heb 11:1)  It is unseen, for now.  But the fact that you see it on the inside of you, that you hope against hope, that you have decided you will have it, that very fact is what will bring it to pass!  The whole world says “I will believe it when I see it.”  As believers, we say “I believe it and I therefore will see it!”  2 Cor 4:18 says “ while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”  Hebrews 11:3 says “By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.”  The unseen realm gives birth to that which is seen.

Believe His promises and you will see His promised land!

There are lots of things vying for the throne of our heart.  There are lots of seeds that want planted in the garden of our heart.  Some are good seeds.  Some are weed seed.  When we operate out of our surroundings, we are often tending to the seed of weeds.  “Fret not, it tends only to evil.”  (Ps 37:8b, ESV)  Our hearts are made to tend what they treasure.  We need to place His Word on the throne of our heart!  Don’t allow negative circumstances or fearful feelings to dominate the meditation of your heart.  Galatians 3:11 says that the “just shall live by faith” (i.e., not by fretting).  God’s sorts of results come through faith that accesses His promises.  “Without faith it is impossible to please God for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”  (Heb. 11:6)

Good News: God rewards those who seek Him!

Be blessed!  God is a good God!  He is always with you and all that He has is yours!  Don’t be a grumpy older son (see Luke 15:17-32) that doesn’t realize God’s promises.  God is a rewarder.  Seeking Him should be a delight!  The enemy wants us to listen to religious teachings that talk the blessings out of God’s Word – that sterilize the potency of His promises.  It takes someone other than God to teach you that serving God is not fun.  “Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.”  (Ps. 37:4)
