Spirit, Soul, and Body (part 1a)

Spirit, Soul, and Body (part 1a)

~ This blog post is an adapted excerpt from a sermon by Brad Ettore.  You can hear the whole sermon, Spirit, Soul, and Body (part 1), from Agathos Church. Columbus, Ohio by clicking here.

How do you grow in Christ?  There are two necessary components for growing in the Lord:

  • Desire
  • Understanding

Desire is like power – it propels.  Desire is like the engine of a car.  Understanding is like the steering wheel.  Desire creates momentum; understanding sets direction.  Understanding corrects course.  Understanding recognizes landmarks, orients efforts, and steers our lives.  “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.”  (Prov. 23:7)

A teacher can bring understanding.  Desire is student-supplied.  We get desire on our own.  We have to personally desire to go after God.  No teacher can steer a parked car.

So, what causes our desire / motivation to ebb and flow?

Vision causes desire. “Where there is no vision the people perish” (Prov. 29:18)  Perishing is the opposite of prospering.  If you want to grow in the Lord, you have to have vision.  Vision causes desire.

Desire is evidenced by discipline.  In other words, discipline shows desire.  Contrary to our popular understanding of discipline, discipline is not “not trying to do things;” it is “really wanting to do one thing!”  So, if you really want to grow in the Lord, you would want to:

  • Place yourself under great teaching
  • Catch a Vision (Stir up your desire for God by focusing on what seeking the Lord will do in your life)

So, let’s catch vision . . . What are the 4 greatest benefits we get of walking with God / maturing in Christ?

  • Growing Closer to God
  • More Love
  • More Joy
  • More Peace

Think about these four benefits.  I mean it – stop and consider them.  They are real.  Do you want to grow closer to God?  Do you want to walk in His Love, His Joy, and His Peace?  To you, are these reasons to desire God – to go after God?  I can’t tell you that they are.  But they are available to you.  Your choice.  What is missing in your life?  Would one of these things make a difference in that part of your life that feels vacant – or less than fulfilled?  How would it make a difference for you?

God is anxiously desiring every one of these benefits to come to full fruition in our lives.  If we will do the WORK of this teaching (Spirit, Soul, and Body), we will experience these blessings and more!  You bring the desire.  The rest of the teaching will bring understanding.  Together, they will produce tremendous growth and 4 great benefits!
