Forgiven Once and Forever (part 6)

~ This blog post is an excerpt from a sermon by Brad Ettore.  Hear the whole sermon, Forgiven Once and Forever, from Agathos Church. Columbus, Ohio

Now, should the fact that Jesus has paid for all of our sins – for all time – cause us to go sin?  Paul had to deal with this same question – in fact he addressed it 4 times.  Apparently many whom he spoke with worried about the same misapplication of this truth!  So should the grace of God be a license for our sin?  GOD FORBID!  CERTAINLY NOT!!!

There are 4 pathways of relationship in life:

  • How God relates to us
  • How we relates to God
  • How we relate to others
  • How others relate to us

Four pathways of relationship.  Two vertical, two horizontal.  This whole message of being forgiven once and forever addresses only one of those 4 pathways – How God relates to us.  In terms of God’s relation to man, the sin issue is DONE!  It’s done and God beckons us to enter into His rest (see Heb 4:1-12).  Sin has ZERO EFFECT on GOD’s RELATIONSHIP to you.  We think surely that can’t be true because it seems like our sin needs dealt with.  You are right, but our sin HAS been dealt with already when Jesus took it all upon Himself on the Cross.  God is the judge of the universe and He is not going to punish you for a sin that He has already punished His Son for!!!  That would be double jeopardy.  He is a just God, He’s not going to do that.  We can wallow in our sin and get all upset before God and say “this needs to be dealt with” . . . but God is going to say “you are right it needs to be dealt with . . . and I ALREADY have dealt with it.  So if you are looking for your sin to be punished more I can’t help you out – I already put all the punishment for every one of your sins on My Son.”

So does sin matter?  ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY IT MATTERS!  Sin matters because it affects how we relate to God and to others – and also how others relate to us.  Sin has not lost any of its effect here in the earth.  Sin is DEADLY.  It will bring death.  “The wages of sin is death.” (Rom 6:23)  Sin will bring death to your emotional well-being, your physical well-being, your psychological well-being.  It will bring death to your relationships and your finances.  If you go out and live in a sexually immoral lifestyle, you can still get sexually transmitted diseases and have children outside of the context of marriage.  Sin still has its full effect.  It is still every bit as deadly as it ever has been.  However, God is not going to deal with sin again – until the judgment day.  Only then will God deal with sin again.  For now, we have peace with God!  “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ . . .” (Rom. 5:1)  We have peace!!!  Peace with the God of the universe no less!  Praise God!  You are not at enmity with God any longer!  This is what the Word of God says!  What GREAT NEWS!

Romans 3:20-22 is a great place in scripture to “camp-out” in order to get these truths more fully: “Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.  But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ . . .”  We have been given His righteousness!  We are in right standing with God!  If I enter into sin, even though my relationship with God doesn’t change (I am still His forgiven child), my experience of that relationship changes drastically.  “For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.”  (1 Jn 3:20-22)  So sin affects our confidence –  which is our faith.  But even if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart.  God is saying “I understand that your heart is condemning you but I am above that.  I am not bringing the condemnation.  I understand what happened and I’ve forgiven you.”  God is greater than our heart and knows all things though your heart is still condemning you and you therefore will not have confidence towards God.

Make sense?  Sin is deadly.  Stay away from it.  Sin is stupid.  When we sin, it opens the door to the enemy and he will come into our lives and wreak havoc.  “What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?” (Rom. 6:15-16)  Sin will enslave you to the enemy!  Don’t sin!  I don’t want to be a slave for the enemy.  No fun!  As Andrew Wommack says “Satan will eat your lunch and pop the bag” if you walk in sin.  We need to stay away from sin.  But, our power to stay away from sin comes from knowing the beautiful truth that God has forgiven us forever!  We can walk with a clear conscience with God!

So if anyone ever asks you “what’s your status with God?”  You can confidently answer “praise God, I’m the righteousness of God!”  “I am forgiven once and for all!”  When you understand this you realize we are not supposed to have a sin-consciousness.  As believers, we are supposed to have a righteousness-consciousness!  You are FORGIVEN FOREVER!  “Stand fast in the liberty by which Christ has made you free!”
